Comorian musician Nawal will give a free concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in the Ridges Auditorium at Ohio University. The concert will be Nawal's second visit to Athens and part of her 2011 tour.
An interactive workshop with the musician will also be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30 in the Ridges Auditorium for any interested parties.
According to Steve Howard, director of the African Studies Program and graduate chair of the Center of International Studies, African Studies and the School of Music will inaugurate African Music Month 2011 with Nawal's visit.
"Nawal is making her second pilgrimage to Ohio University," Howard said. "She is a deeply spiritual and accessible singer whose music touches a great swath of the cultures around the Indian Ocean."
The Comoros Islands are located in the Indian Ocean, off of the African continent's eastern coastline.
Both the concert and workshop are made possible by Ohio University's Title VI National Resource Center for African Studies funded by the U.S. Department of Education. 09/27/11
