Straight out of the gritty French port city of Marseilles, Watcha Clan is a missing link between the acoustic traditionalists of the old world music paradigm and the bass-boosting club fusionists of tomorrow. The band draws from the post-colonial cultural mash-up of contemporary Europe to make futuristic folk music with its Gnawa gimbris, Balkan accordions, and electric guitars alongside laptops and drum machines. Watcha Clan is led by the captivating Sister Ka, who brings a tangled head of dreadlocks, crisp Arabic vocals, and Irie dance moves. This track, “Im Nin Alu,” comes off the band’s brand new release Radio Babel, and it’s filled with dubstep-style bass wobbles and shrieking clarinets. 04/29/11
