Each week, Nat Geo Music scours the far reaches of the internet to bring you the coolest new music videos from around the globe.
This week, Independent record label Kanaga System Krush (K.S.K.) releases Wassoulou Foli from Malian master drummer Amadou 'Taga' Sidibe and friends featuring 'Tu' Sinayoko. Sidibe, a Master Sogonikou Djembe Fola hails from the capital of the Wassoulou region in Southern Mali. A master of the djembe drum, Taga is also a revered traditional medicine man, healer, hunter and farmer.
Taga is a renowned figure throughout Mali drawing crowds into the thousands. He is both a revered hunter and musician versed in sogonikun, kind of music typically performed during ceremonies meant to uplift and beat back negativity. He is often called on to hype up audiences and entertain the occasional bush spirit, he says.
During his youth, a lack of drummers led the elders in his community to encourage him to take up drumming seriously. From there, he began an apprenticeship with Mansa Bagayoko, a famed Djembe player from a neighbouring village who in turn had trained under the tutelage of Mamadi Sidibe from Segu. Studying at that age meant that Taga, travelled long distances to his teacher and honed his skill to the extent of having swollen hands. Taga is a testament to the continued relevance of tradition and a long lineage of traditional musicianship.
