Let's play a little word association. Just blurt out the first thing that comes into your mind. Are you ready? Brass band. Regardless of the country of origin, you probably thought of trumpets, tubas, and other distinctly non-sexy instruments. Well, Raya Brass Band ("exuberant Balkan music from the village of Brooklyn") certainly features trumpets and tubas, and it also features another distinctly non-sexy instrument: the accordion.
But here's the thing. The more brass bands I find, the harder I find resisting them. Why? Because Every brass band I have ever encountered plays uptempo music that generally sounds pretty happy and gets me moving. Seriously, I think if you have a pulse it's almost impossible to sit still when you listen to a brass band.
Raya Brass Band is no different. Just listen to the song "Arkabarka" and try to remain stationary. I bet you can't do it. Or pick any other song on Dancing on Roses, Dancing on Cinders (self-released, 2012). You'll have to fight against tapping your toes or moving your head or shaking your backside.
