The sounds of ‘joie de vivre’ come to Lopez's Woodmen Hall

BY SCOTT RASMUSSEN

Non-stop dance rhythms, hearty call-and-response singing, traditional style foot percussion, and a passion for the music are just a few things that Genticorum brings to the table.

The three members of the traditional Quebec music group will bring their sounds to Lopez's Woodman Hall, April 19, 7:30 p.m.

“Quebecois music is joyful music and really resonates with me,” said Sue DuMond. “The members of Genticorum are top notch world renowned players who clearly love to play together and that translates through the “joie de vivre” that they bring to their performances.”

DuMond is responsible for the group performing on the island as part of the “Home on the Grange” series, this will be the 25th show since the series started about 5 years ago.

“I try to embrace the age diversity and listening styles of the entire community by creating space to dance and a place to sit. Everyone has fun,” she said. “At a recent show, I looked out in the audience and saw young adults I’ve known as babies, who grew up running around these halls, now with their own children dancing to the music.”

Genticorum features the talents of Yann Falquet on guitar, jaw harp, and vocals, Alexandre de Grosbois-Garand on the wooden flute, electric bass, fiddle and vocals, and Pascal Gemme on fiddle, “feet,” and vocals.

Genticorum has been nominated for Canadian Juno and Felix awards and has been the recipient of several Canadian Folk Awards. The group has given more than 800 concerts in more than 15 countries

The band also performs original compositions, which ring so true to tradition that audiences often find it hard to tell the difference between the old and the new. And no matter what song they are playing, listeners may start tappin’ their toes to what sounds like a whole fleet of musicians. Don’t let this band of three fool you … their talent of singing and playing multiple instruments provides an illusion of a band more than twice their size.

This show is $15, kids are 12 and under free, 12 to 16 are $6. For more info, visit www.genticorum.com.
