The Gypsy brass-band music of the Balkan region has acquired a limited but very serious cult following here on the other side of the Atlantic, and this disc acts as a very enjoyable sonic battle of supremacy between two of the music's top ensembles: Fanfare Ciocarlia (from Romania) and Boban Markovic & Orchestra (from Serbia). The verdict? Well, it sounds like a draw to me: both bands offer high-energy, richly orchestrated tunes that work equally well for sedentary listening (with legs wildly bouncing) and crazy, arms-over-the-head dancing. When the two ensembles team up on a hilariously Balkanized version of the James Bond theme, the results are fantastic -- a must for your library's next staff party. 10/01/11
