Boban i Marko Markovic Orkestar vs. Fanfare Ciocarla Planet Gypsy’s two hottest brass bands meet in Transylvania and fight in an epic duel. The result is a party record that makes you deaf or mad. Or both. The world of rap lives only for this : some ridiculous and vain fights to reveal who’s the best among Lil Wayne, Kanye West or Jay-Z... and now gypsies do the same, but in their own hilarious and gargantuesque way ! So Romania’s Fanfare Ciocarlia challenges Boban i Marko Markovic Orkestar from Serbia to know who’s got the world’s best gypsy brass band. In the left corner, the 12 musicians of Fanfare Ciocarlia, one of the fastest brass section ever heard (able to reach 200 BPM !), famous for its «Born to be wild» cover on Borat’s soundtrack. In the right corner stand trumpet superstars Boban and son Marko Markovic (only 23) with their 13-piece orchestra. Awarded many times at Guca festival in Serbia, admired by many musicians including Miles Davis, Boban’s orchestra became internationally famous thanks to Kusturica’s movies. So, if we sum up, we have 25 wild Romany musicians, fast and furious, facing themselves on a record ? But what the hell NOLA will do ? Balkan Brass Battle has been recorded during a 48-hours sessions in a transylvanian hotel near Vlad Tepes’ castle, better known as Count Dracula himself... The album’s construction is both clever and malicious, one has to listen to it very loud with no interruption between the very first to the last. The Gypsies shout to themselves, provoke themselves like Mohammed Ali and Joe Frazier. It’s an album in which silence is forbidden, brimming with groovy and noisy anthems — not a record for headache days. The two heavyweights play one after another on some titles, and together on some other tracks (like on Devla, extract below). Duke Ellington’s Caravan is covered for instance by each band, each delivering a very different version from the other. Monty Norman’s James bond Theme is revisited in a magistral 25-piece jam. And Fanfare Ciocarlia covers I am your Gummy Bear… a stupid song from the McDonald’s kids menu turned into a crazy funky tune. The rest of the répertoire is taken from traditional gypsies’ or composed by Marko Markovic. Who’s the winner in the end ? You’ll have to attend a gig to know this. Anyway, New Orleans shall bring a response to this : what about Rebirth Brass Band vs. Boban i Marko Markovic Orkestar ? For more info and gigs: http://www.asphalt-tango.de/  06/17/11 >> go there
