Debo Band
American soul was intermingling with Ethiopian music long before Richard Roundtree strutted the streets of Addis Ababa in Shaft in Africa. Keeping the fusion of funk and folk alive is Debo Band, a dedicated disciple of the unique pop sounds from Ethiopia’s past. The Boston troupe injects raw jazz-funk with sidewinding melodies, trebly organ and thick blasts of horns. The deep cuts on the band’s Flamingoh ooze wah-wah guitar and nightlife rhythms from the Horn of Africa. Joining Debo and lending authenticity are members of Fendika, an ensemble of the nomadic tradition, who ululate and whirl above the sweaty grooves. Martyrs’ Sat 25 at 10pm, $25. Navy Pier Sun 26 at 3:30pm, free.—BD
