If you’re up for some saucy exoticism, one guy who bests just about everyone else dealing in Balkan and/or Middle Eastern grooves is Slovenian singer Magnifico. Infusing some pop and ska into the sound on his latest album, "Magnification," he comes up with the party album of the summer.
A guitarist and former folk dancer, Magnifico is considered provocative in his own country. His grooves are as often topical as they are campy, often tackling topics like homophobia and life post-socialism -- but it’s his energy and arrangements that translate best. With rapid fire skank, energetic Balkan horns, spaghetti western guitars, Memphis soul and his own Slavic growl, the only thing I can imagine more fun than listening to "Magnification" is a live show.
