While not rising to the global infatuation that met Die Antwoord's imagined trailer trash rap, Just-a-Band's 'Ha-He' has stirred up Kenya's local conversation by re-instating the pop-cultural superhero "Makmende" back into the conversation.
Last month, the relatively unknown (and thus, aptly titled) Just-a-Band made a blaxploitation spoof video for a new track for their song 'Ha-He,' which follows so-called Makmende through a pile of fist fights and some rescued dames with the help of a hand-held camera and groovy period costumes.
In Kenya, "Makmende" refers to both a kind of fictional superhero, and is a slang word for a gung-ho tough guy. More than the content of the song, an electro/R&B blend of pop, the video is being discussed as the first Kenyan video to garner such rapid, viral attention, with the band garnering 80,000 Facebook fans in a matter of weeks, and tens of thousand view for the 'Ha-He' video.
And since business-centric sites seem just as interested in the video as music ones, it looks like fans will have to wait for Just-a-Band to followup what they've begun. Watch the 'Ha-He' video after the jump. 04/13/10
