Brazil's Orquestra Contemporânea de Olinda will begin their first American tour April 1 with a free concert at Lincoln Center's Atrium. The New York date is followed by another two nights later at the club SOB's and performances in Washington, D.C., Chicago, New Orleans and Miami. The group will also host two workshops in New Orleans.
Hailing from Pernambuco, Orquestra Contemporânea de Olinda was conceived by percussionist Gilú, who combined the traditional guitar-bass-drums-vocal setup with a brass section. Orquestra Contemporânea de Olinda was nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2009 in the category of Best Tropical Brazilian Roots Album.
According to the Lincoln Center website, "Orquestra Contemporânea de Olinda brings together some of the leading musicians of Northeast Brazil's fertile mangue beat music scene, mixing elements of frevo, the local Carnival soundtrack, rock, funk, and ska."
