La Cherga is a crew of talented musical folk based out of Austria. For their album, Revolve, they have created a compilation of tracks that are completely out of the ordinary. Their sound is a melding of Austrian dub, Gypsy brass and funk that’s peppered with reggae and pop.
La Cherga’s founder and producer, Nevenko Bucan, is recognized in Austrian music circles for seamlessly mixing dub, drum & bass, as well as “rootsy grooves from the former Yugoslavia.” But, despite his relative notoriety, he wanted more. Specifically, he wanted to create live music, instead of solely re-mixing what already existed.
When Bucan and Bosnian guitarist Muamer “Muki” Gazibegovic met, Bucan’s hope of creating a live-performing group became a reality. Together with Macedonian horn players Kiril Kuzmanov and Trajce Velkov, Bucan and Muki collectively became La Cherga.
“In Romany (the language spoken by Romani people, Gypsies), ‘cherga’ means a bunch of people, often wandering around without a purpose or direction,” Bucan explained in an interview for a press release. “You could say it describes the Gypsies themselves, but we in the band are now immigrants, too. There are definitely links between the choice of that band name and the course of our lives.”
La Cherga is touring throughout Europe this summer. You can sample tracks from Revolve, here
