Del Castillo
“Infinitas Rapsodias”
Smilin’ Castle Records
Del Castillo is one of those bands you have to see to believe. And, luckily, with theirlatest release you get to.
The two-disc set combines a 13-track CD and a DVD with several videos and live studio takes of “What a Wonderful World” and a nine-minute “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”
The Austin, Texas, band of stellar session musicians, anchored by brothers Rick and Mark del Castillo, blends rock, blues and Flamenco, something like the Gypsy Kings meet Guns N Roses. There’s even a little Italian opera with Maria Kaufmann joining lead singer Alex Ruiz for “Amor Venme a Buscar.”
“Infinitas Rapsodias” revives several songs from the band’s four earlier CDs, including “Vida” and “Perdoname.”
The stylistic shifts can be a little jarring, from blazing electric guitars to driving club beats and opera. But the acoustic guitar playing is so crisp and romantic — and Ruiz’s low, gritty voice so perfectly suited to these earthy jams — that all is forgiven.
