Kami Thompson, “Love Lies” (Warner Classics). 3 stars.
A member of British songwriting royalty, Kami Thompson is the daughter of Richard and Linda Thompson and the sister Teddy Thompson. And fret not Thompson fans, Richard and Teddy are on board for this debut, along with Kami’s friends like Sean Lennon, Lucy and Martha Wainwright and others.
“Love Lies” is a tasty first album, marked by solid if not sensational songwriting, the right arrangements for the right songs and a sense of wisdom far beyond her years. There’s a general melancholy to a lot of the songs, but also some uptempo material, notably, “Tick Tock” and the strong “Gotta Hold On,” the latter a full electric work out with harmonies.
As a special treat there’s a “hidden bonus track” version of George Harrison’s beautifully forlorn “Don’t Bother Me.”
