t is quite hard to describe the development level of the music industry in Chisinau, since it is a really small city. On the other side, since it has a small population, as referring to the cultural/artistic life, everyone knows what others do. In other words you are always in the centre of the events. In the ’90s, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the musical life in Chisinau was truly alive, a lot of new bands, new styles. There finally was free access to all sorts of music, and you could play whatever you wanted, so there was quite a large variety of styles. Many continued the tradition of the Russian rock, others orientated to British rock or funk, heavy metal, etc.
 
A legendary place for the musicians was the Black Elephant club. Many bands started on that stage. Even now when referring to the music life of that period, everyone recalls Black Elephant as one of the most important elements of cultural life of that time.
 
Nowadays most of the bands play alternative rock, although there is a tendency to orientate to indie pop. And like everywhere, lots of musicians flirt with dubstep. Also since the music industry is very weak here, many bands try to go further. That is why many of them start playing their songs in English in order to gain popularity outside the country. An example is the Brit-rock band FurioSnails, who launched its last album in English.
