Imagine Nick Cave fronting Devotchka, cast in a politicised West End stage musical and there you have Geoff Berner’s Victory Party. Certainly an entertaining and diverse record and presumably with an energetic live show to match, we are all in for a treat.
Hailing from Vancouver this is Geoff Berner’s Mint Records debut which, will be released in the U.K. on 21 March ‘11. This accordion wizard has however, been releasing albums over the past decade.
For this record Geoff has recruited musicians who specialised in authentic Klezmer music and Geoff’s notes on each song are here
all of which shows the great depth of his inspiration and makes for very interesting reading.
A challenging record for sure and one that will appeal easily, to the aforementioned Devotchka and Gogol Bordello followers. This genre of music denotes an eastern European feel and believe me, its well worth the trip to investigate the album.
For those of us usually exploring indie, rock, post rock, Americana and electronica, consider this album an ‘Alka-Selzer’ to clear the musical brain! 03/06/11
