Toby Marks, otherwise known by his pseudonym, Banco de Gaia, has a musical background that’s as eclectic as the tracks in his newest album, Songs from the Silk Road. Marks has, over the last two decades, been a songwriter, producer, instrumentalist and DJ who has since come to be recognized and respected around the world for his talents and innovative musical creations. But now, Marks is perhaps most commonly known as the man who creates electronic remixes interspersed with global vibes. His new album, which will be released this February, is no exception.
Marks has dubbed his own style “world music with a disco beat,” which is a pretty accurate description of Songs from the Silk Road. Its songs are played with a fast tempo and borrow traditional tunes from around the globe with various instruments and styles. What’s more, the sounds on his upcoming album, whether long and ambient or light and playful, are all exuberant in their own right. This, we argue, gives Banco De Gaia’s music an authenticity that, in some cases of electronica, can be lost in translation.
Whether you’re sitting–working diligently–at your desk today, or enjoying your extended weekend, Songs from the Silk Road is a great compilation to listen to in virtually any setting.
For a taste of this musician’s work prior to Songs from the Silk Road, below is the music video for one of Banco De Gaia’s most popular tracks, ”Last Train to Lhasa,” which was written as a commentary on the Chinese occupation of Tibet.
