If you have ever read Voodoo Funk, you know it is a blog dedicated to African funk. Part of the blog is the writer detailing his pilgrimages to Africa to dig for funk. You, loyal reader, do not need a pilgrimage to Africa to experience true Afrofunk.
Chopteeth Afrofunk Big Band has released a live album (Grigri Discs, 2011) that gives you a healthy dose of African funk. If you've never heard this kind of music, this album is a great introduction. This album starts with horns that have a sort of Latin feel. Then come the polyrhythms, and just listening, it's hard to tell just how many percussionists there are. Then the entire band erupts into this incredible groove. If "J. J. D." doesn't get some part of you moving, check your vitals.
The same could be said for "Gagne Perdu." With the horns, the bass, and the percussion on this song, you won't be able to keep still when this one plays.
Oh, and if you like those, get ready for more of the same. This album is full of songs that will not only get you moving, they'll also get you sweaty. Yeah, you'll move enough to break a sweat. I don't even think much more needs to be said about this album. If you like good funk, you'll love this. One other thing I know for sure is that if I ever get the chance to see this band, I'll do it if at all possible. This live recording tells me that a Chopteeth show would be a real experience.
