Huun Huur Tum, one of World Music’s most popular acts, will make a rare US appearance at the UBS Atrium Series on Wednesday, Jan. 12 at 12:30 p.m. The Hudson Riverfront Performing Arts Center, Inc. (HRPAC) presents this series of free lunchtime concerts in the Atrium at 1000 Harbor Boulevard in the Lincoln Harbor section of Weehawken.

The members of this astonishing ensemble come from the Republic of Tuva, a sparsely settled region of grasslands, forests, and mountain ridges that lies in the center of Asia, just north of Mongolia. Using indigenous instruments and “throat singing,” the group preserves some of the world’s oldest form of music making.

The most distinctive characteristic of Tuvan music involves a method of vocalization in which the singers sing both the note (drone) and the drone’s overtone(s), thus producing two or three notes simultaneously. The overtone may sound like a flute, whistle or bird, but is actually solely a product of the human voice.

Huun Huur Tu has collaborated with such renowned and diverse artists as Ry Cooder, the Chieftains, Frank Zappa, and The Kronos Quartet. For its current album, “Eternal,” the group joined up with electronic musician & record producer Carmen Rizzo. Time Magazine recently profiled Huun Huur Tu and the CD and the New York Times has called the group “A Musical Marvel.”

All performances for the UBS Atrium Series begin at 12:30 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public. For directions, late-breaking concert news, and other updates, please check the HRPAC website (www.hrpac.org) or call the concert hotline at 201-716-4540.

The HRPAC is a group that is dedicated to someday building a performing arts center on the Hudson County waterfront, likely in Weehawken. For now, they present free concerts in that area.  01/06/11 >> go there
