Throat singing (which involves creating overtones that sound like whistles soaring and twittering over the fundamental sung pitches) has been especially highly developed in the southern Siberian region of Tuva. The Huun Huur Tu ensemble have introduced many audiences around the world to the art of throat singing, and the group's latest effort finds them collaborating with Western musicians to create a subtly innovative variation on the tradition--the result is maybe a bit musically uneven, but fascinating 10/28/10
