Album Review
>>
This is the first review I’ve ever done which is partially based on climate. Gecko Turner is a Spanish chap, recording on the Lovemonk label out of Madrid (to use boxing parlance). He sings in English and delivers his songs in an easy drawl, like a lazier Eagle-Eye Cherry or the singing Gil Scott-Heron. This is a real warm weather record, full of loose jazzy vibes, mellow 70s funk, African and Cuban rhythms and some exquisite horns. Everything on it screams “listen to me in a hot bar on a hot summer’s night somewhere hot and I will be the best record you’ve ever heard.” In the somewhat shitty British climate, it doesn’t have quite the same impact. I’d imagine it’ll sell buttons over here, unless it gets championed by someone on Radio 2 and forces its way into the public consciousness. Let’s hope it does. It would be a shame not to hear ‘So Sweet’, a lovely acoustic guitar and horns number with a “hey hey hey” refrain which will melt your heart. Or ‘Truly’, a smooth soul groove, again with some fantastic trumpet. Sometimes this album sounds like the kind of music playing for the grown-ups in the country club in ‘Dirty Dancing’ (is that merengue I’m hearing? Dunno), but most of it sounds more like the music the cool kids danced to in the staff quarters. 10/26/10
