Gecko Turner, 'Gone Down South'
Like a mellower Manu Chao, Spain's Gecko Turner blends funk, rock, R&B, Afrobeat and Caribbean rhythms into a head-nodding sound tailor-made for summer festivals and lazy backyard barbecues. His latest features more memorable culture clashes, including some Spanish hip-hop by way of James Brown's Apollo Theater ("Tea Time") and a chorus of African thumb pianos jamming in a Seville flamenco bar ("Mbira Bira"). If you like your world music with a little swagger, Turner's your guy. 10/10/10
