Systema Solar is a collective of some of Colombia’s finest DJs, MCs, producers and percussionists — plus one Belgian VJ at a minimum. Brought together by a passion for all things Afro-Caribbean, their name references the Colombian sound system parties called pikos.

On tour, they become a kind of nomadic piko themselves. True to their vision, they don’t just play shows — they put on what they like to call Berbenautika. Dressed like South American space voyagers, they throw complete electro-tropical audio/visual festivals with the power to take a crowd wherever Systema Solar is going.

The group’s 2010 self-titled debut album is a dense tapestry of champeta, cumbia, and other South American rhythms in the hands of some raw, rapid-fire emcees, and some brilliant electronic minds. (Main producer Juan Carlos Pellegrino has worked with Daft Punk.) Sonically, they unite the gleaming future with the dusty streets.

For an introduction — or perhaps an initiation — to their sound, check out the video for the hypnotic, psychedelic track “Malpalpitando.” And to get a feel for their street party vibe, watch the video for “Bienvenido.” Then stream all their music at their website and have your own piko — donkey cart boom box not included.

Their ambitious sound and style is matched by even bigger goals. With their socially conscious lyrics and irresistible sound they seek to unite Colombia and the world through joyous music. “Our goal as artists is to project positivity and joy, as a constructive attitude to confront the hard times our world is facing,” Pellegrino has said.

Is Systema Solar even from Earth? Can music change the world? Watch them double fisting microphones in Belgium and judge for yourself:
