Asian dub is among the hottest dance sounds on the planet, and within that world, DJJanaka Selekta is on fire. His new album Pushing Air (released July 6) blends Indian folk traditions, classical Indian instruments, and trippy electronica into a pleasing brew: 60s raga-rock meets 21st-century production. It’s grabbed plenty of praise in Britain, among music folks with Indo-Pak savvy, and also in San Francisco, where the Sri Lankan native Janaka now lives.
Janaka co-founded the music collective Dhamaal Soundsystem (famous for its mashups of South Asian and electronic music in the Bay Area), producing an underground hit album for the group – along with plenty of remixes for better known artists (including theAsian Dub Foundation) and even video-game music (for the hit X-Box title Project Gotham). But Pushing Air represents not only his solo debut; it’s also the debut album for a new label, Chaiwalla’s Boombox, an outgrowth of the music blog of the same name.
Janaka makes his Chicago debut with this gig, which starts at “9 PM(ish),” according to the club. Be prepared to dance hard, and if you work up an appetite for tandoori chicken or veggie biryani, don’t say we didn’t warn you. 07/23/10
