Push it real good: Janaka Selekta has lived all over the world — including Sri Lanka, the U.K., and Kuwait — and absorbed a smorgasbord of sounds. But instead of trying to make sense of his disparate influences within a single outlet, the local DJ and producer has a number of projects. Two of them, his solo venture andMighty Dub Killaz (Selekta’s collaboration with JC Stokes, aka Papa Roads), will perform together on Sunday, July 4, at the Elbo Room as part of the weekly Dub Mission party. The show will celebrate the release of Selekta’s solo debut, Pushing Air — a thoughtful, beatsy creation with tasty Indian spices that originallycame out last year, but is now receiving a more widespread release thanks to Chaiwalla’s Boombox — with Mighty Dub Killaz headlining.
“Mighty Dub Killaz is my main focus,” Selekta says. “It has elements of reggae, soul, blues, and electronic in all its forms, and even classical Indian music. The ideas have evolved naturally, and we pay homage to making songs that underline the sentiment of the piece and not a genre.”
Following Sunday’s gig, Mighty Dub Killaz will take part in the second annual SuperHero Street Fair in the Bayview onSaturday, July 10, and the duo is already booked to tour the Midwest. MDK is also currently in talks to open for a top-shelf artist, but you’ll have to be patient regarding the official announcement. 07/01/10
