On Sunday June 20, SummerStage will launch the festivities with an afternoon of francophone world music carrying us from Mali, to Haiti, to multicultural France. Starting at 3pm in Central Park, Paris-based Salif Keita, “the Golden Voice of Africa," will once again demonstrate why he is one of the most celebrated African vocalists of all time, with a career spanning four decades and an influence felt worldwide. He will be followed by Tabou Combo, Haiti’s preeminent high-energy dance band, whose fresh interpretations borrow equally from Haiti’s traditional drum-heavy carnival music, the meringue of the Dominican Republic, and American R&B and soul. Lo’Jo, based in France but with a resolutely international outlook, will wrap things up with its unique blend of Berber, gypsy and French folk music.
