Louisiana Cajun band Feufollet returns with its second album, "En Couleurs," kicking off with the funky vibe of "Au Fond du lac," with its smoky, Animals-like groovy plod. It’s Exhibit A in the argument that the band has moved further along in its quest to update Cajun sounds.
Even more so than the debut album, Feufollet injects traditional sounds with a pop sensibility that only serves to widen them -- songwriting and culture winding together in the common goal of perpetuation. The band never opts on the side of crass confections, though, preferring slow and haunting torch songs like "La berceuse du vieux voyageur" or stomping rock songs like "Je m’en va." Even when Feufollet goes for total ditties, it’s with charmers like the gentle romper "Ouvre la porte," and there’s even a cool and brief foray into psychedelia. "En Couleurs" is a major step forward in bringing Cajun styles into the mainstream -- and an extremely charming one.
