United sounds Concert, fund-raiser to mark release of Joyful Noise CD TOM EADER ST. CROIX — Reggae artists from St. Croix and throughout the Caribbean who are featured on the newly-released compilation album from I Grade Records called Joyful Noise will unite for a CD release concert and fundraiser beginning at 11 p.m. Friday at Club 54. "It's a CD release party and an awareness and fund-raising event to combat the epidemic of gun violence on St. Croix." said local Red I Band musician Laurent "Tippy" Alfred, producer of the Joyful Noise album and owner of I Grade Records. "There's so much senseless killings here on St. Croix we wanted to combat that through the vessel of music." In an effort to help stop the violence before it starts. Alfred said a portion of the proceeds raised during the concert will be donated to the St. Croix Boys and Girls Clubs. The theme for the event is. "make a joyful noise, make a peaceful community." Joyful Noise features an impressive roster of artists from throughout the Caribbean (Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Trinidad and Guyana) who are at the forefront of the conscious reggae movement from their respective lands. St. Croix residents will have an opportunity to see some of the artists featured on the album perform their hits songs live during the CD release show. "We're really excited to have Duane Stephenson as our featured special guest," Alfred said. Stephenson, of Jamaica, has two songs featured on Joyful Noise called "Hard Times" and "I'm Fine." Other artists who will perform during the show include veteran singer/producer Batch, the poetic songwriter Danny I, the fyah chanter Sabbattical Ahdah and up-and-coming singjay Junior P. as well as Fyah Train. All of the artists will be backed by the Red I Band. There will also be juggling by DJ Ninja P and DJ Swain. Whealan "Island Boy" Massicott. guitarist for Red I Band, said before the Joyful Noise album came out all of the featured artists were given rhythms to work with while writing their lyrics. Even though none of the artists were given a directive to write songs with a nonviolence theme, he said the majority of the songs on the album promote nonviolence. "There is a consciousness of necessity to find unity and promote nonviolence." Massicott said. "The album is a good seed for further promoting nonviolence and unity." Individuals can support the nonviolence message by uniting at Club 54 Friday for a peaceful concert filled with joyful noise. "We really are inviting everyone and we expect that there will be a broad range of attendance," Massicott said. "We intend to have some fun and make a joyful noise."
