A few years back, a Canadian dobro player and two classical Indian musicians joined forces to make an album. They've just released a follow-up to that record.
We kicked things off with a wonderful version of "Amazing Grace." It appears on an album titled Slide To Freedom 2 that just came out. It's as strong as the album that came before it – a gorgeous mix of classical Indian and blues. The playing is superb and the production is top-notch.
The main players on this disc are Doug Cox, who plays dobro and slide; Salil Bhatt, who plays the Satvik Veena, an instrument that has 20 strings and is made of a 100-year-old oak wood block; and Ramkumar Mishra, who plays tabla.
This time around the musicians invited John Boutte to sing on some tracks. He's a soul singer based in New Orleans. Salil's dad, VM Bhatt, who won a Grammy in 94 with Ry Cooder for their album, Meeting By The River, also guests on the album. 05/08/09
