Ravish Momin started writing poetry when he was 8 years old. His love for the sciences simultaneously led him to obtain a B.Sc in Civil/Environmental Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in the US. He has studied drumset with master-drummers Andrew Cyrille, Bob Moses, and Ian Froman. He has also studied North Indian Classical percussion with Misha Masud, a disciple of Pandit Taranth Rao.
His musical influences are extremely diverse and eclectic, keeping with his philosophy of continually adding sounds and ideas to his musical palette. Even though his ideas are fundamentally seated in the Indian musical traditions, he ultimately hope to be able to seamlessly combine all those musical ideas to create a sound/identity that is totally unique, that is him in totality. That is the challenge, and the lifetime dedication to the process of listening and reacting.
Ravish Momin (composition, percussion, voice, laptop) is the leader of the critically acclaimed avant-world ensemble "Tarana." Recently, he was given the opportunity to perform with pop-star Shakira on televised appearances on "The View" (ABC), "Rockefeller Tree Lighting" (NBC)and the "Rachel Ray Show" (ABC). He has also performed at festivals and concerts across Europe, the US, Canada, Mexico, China and Lebanon with his own ensemble. He has toured and recorded with legendary AACM saxophonist Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre (Tel Aviv Jazz Festival, Israel, EraJazzu Festival, Poland, Sons D'Hiver Festival, Paris, France, Kerava Jazz Festival, Finland, Guelph Jazz Festival, Canada, Chicago Jazz Festival, amongst others), and saxophonists Sabir Mateen and Peter Epstein, guitarist Brad Shepik, bassists Wilber Morris and William Parker, Violinists Billy Bang, Jason Kao Hwang, percussionists Susie Ibarra, Kenny Wolleson & Jim Black, trumpeters Roy Campbell and Raphe Malik, and Pianist Ursel Schlicht's Ex Tempore. He has also worked with Hip-Hop artist Dalek, and also tours with the up-and-coming rock band Fulton Lights, and recorded for the CleanFeed, Delmark, NuBop, CIMP, Entropy Stereo, & BlueRegard Record Labels.
