Traditional Quebecois music shares quite a lot with that of Scotland and Ireland - button accordions, fiddles, lively dance tunes - but the melting pot of French-speaking Quebec also created a tradition that has its own specific sounds and rhythms. Groups like La Bottine Souriante and the group we're hearing now, Genticorum, have not only mined the rich ore of French Canadian songs and fiddle tunes, they have pushed the tradition forward by incorporating jazz, classical, and by creating their own compositions.
Genticorum is a Montreal-based trio that includes Yann Falquet, Pascal Gemme, and Alex de Grosbois-Garand. The award-winning group has been active since 2000 and their intricate fiddle and flute work, gorgeous vocal harmonies, original compositions, and energetic foot percussion have made them a favorite of audiences around the world. Genticorum is currently on tour in Midwest - they'll be performing in Madison this weekend at La Fête de Marquette. They stopped by the Lake Effect studio en route to Madison to chat with Bonnie North and give us a mini-concert.
You can hear all three songs Genticorum performed for us; Le Tic-Tac du Moulin et Les Malins Plaisirs, La Belle en Vous Aimant, and Brandy Culotte, in the supplemental audio file below.
