My favorite collision of worlds this week is C. J. Chenier, son of zydeco pioneer Clifton Chenier, covering Tom Waits’ “Clap Hands” on his forthcoming album Can’t Sit Down, available on Sept. 13 from World Village music. Chenier retains the warped boogaloo of the original found on Waits’ 1985 eccentric masterpiece Rain Dogs, trading Waits’ carefully damaged melodies with a with an ebullient zydeco twist, topped off with what a dollop of jazz flute. It hearkens back to the heyday of Boozoo Chavis (who also gets covered on the album), when zydeco was as weird as it was bluesy and groovy. 08/24/11
