Taj Weeks is guilty and he’ll admit it. In a recent press video, he says he plays the music he grew up with, not having to search too far to find his niche. From a young age he was singing with his family for evening entertainment and even says, “I don’t know if I started music, I think music started me.” But we won’t give him a hard time for it, especially since he puts his heart and soul into his reggae. Weeks and his band Adowa bring passion into their acoustic roots-rock rhythm , which has a tinge of African folk in the mix. The band’s third release, A Waterlogged Soul Kitchen, describes his reaction to the devastation of Katrina and how he saw Louisiana during and after the disaster. Its sadness, soul, and strength work into a soft sound that will engulf you. While the debut single, “Rain, Rain,” speaks of those suffering in Louisiana, it aims to emulate the never-ending downpour of human suffering and just how easy it is to forget when it doesn’t directly affect you. Be prepared for some soul-inspiring, expressive music that will get you swaggering and maybe even inspire some emotions of your own. 04/20/11
