Boban I Marko Markovic, Devla (PIRANHA MUSIK) Gypsy trumpet king Boban Marković and his son, prized protégé Marko, are the bomb in Balkan brass dance music, harnessing the absolute flexibility of Miles Davis and the cool funk of Herb Alpert in the ultimate expression of their Southern Serbian Rroma roots. Their latest album as the Boban and Marko Marković Orkestar, Devla: Blown Away to Dancefloor Heaven flies effortlessly between echoes of the Ottoman Empire and down-and-dirty grooves that would make P-Funk’s jaws drop. Boban’s decades of experience are now fired by Marko’s youthful vibe—an energy sustained by marathon practice sessions and a lifetime spent with dad on stage. Together, Boban and Marko Marković are expanding the idioms of gypsy brass, as Marko scats (“Devla”), raps in Serbian and English (“Benim Gecem”), and even flirts with flamenco (“Kazi Baba”). All while keeping true to tradition: the lightning-fast melodies, driving rhythms, and exuberant transcendence of the greatest Balkan brass bands. Devla showcases the melismatic and dramatic vocal stylings of these singers, adored at home but little known in the West; the best the Balkans have to offer.

NY Gypsy All-Stars with Husnu Senlendirici US Tour

NY GYPSY ALL-STARS ANNOUNCE US TOUR WITH TURKISH VIRTUOSO HUSNU SENLENDIRICI

For the first time in three years the NY Gypsy All-Stars have plotted various dates into a fifteen-day stretch for their upcoming US tour, which will run from Feb 6 to Feb 21. After having played at prestigious festivals including Central Parks SummerStage and De La Corte Theater, Chicago World Music Festival, NY Gypsy Festival and Madison World Music Festival, New Yorks very own Gypsy All-Stars will bring back the Gypsy beat and funk this time they will be joined by Turkish clarinet master Husnu Senlendirici for a celebration of Turkish and Balkan Music.

Turkish-born Gypsy clarinet player Husnu Senlendirici is revered as a pop star in his native homeland. In the late 90s his Gypsy-funk outfit Laco Tayfa recorded and toured internationally with Brooklyn Funk Essentials. Since then Senlendirici has collaborated with Al Di Meola, tabla legend Zakir Hussain and Bulgarian clarinetist Ivo Paposov. Says the prolific New York trumpeter and bandleader Frank London, In Turkey, the clarinet is their saxophone and Husnu is Michael Brecker, Branford Marsalis and Maceo Parker all rolled into one. He is constantly pushing the envelope in any musical setting, raising the bar whether playing pop, improvisation, progressive folk or dance music.

Expect heart wrenching melodies, lavish ornamentation and off-beat improvisation against complex drum rhythms an East-meets-West fusion of the highest order.

NY Gypsy All-Stars & Husnu Senlendirici US Tour Dates:

Feb 8   @ Berklee School of Music in Boston
Feb 12 @ Salsa Club in Arlington, VA
