Now clear of its 20th birthday, German world music label Piranha Muzik keeps on going strong. While the label habitually reaches out to the furthest flung genre blenders in global groove, Dunklebunt is practically their next door neighbour.
Best known as a DJ; the Vienna resident is one of the primary names associated with the Electric Gypsyland sound of polished breakbeats fused with meaty brass and strings samples from Roma sources. He is renowned for absolutely turning a party out; eschewing cool, restrained breaks like his Viennese forbears Kruder and Dorfmeister, in favour of a quick stepping stomp best experienced with fast-acting, powerful liquor.
His new album, Raindrops and Elephants takes on sources from the Piranha catalog ranging from Cape Verde (Simentera), Albania (Fanfare Tirana), Serbia (Boban & Marko Markovic Orkestar), New York (Frank London's Klezmer Brass Allstars), Marseille (Watcha Clan) and Egypt (Jalilahs Raks Sharki).
This mix of "Chocolate Butterfly" takes his sound a little further into a mind expanding headphone mix.
Dunkelbunt plays Toronto on September 24, and Montreal two days later.
